The traditional model of the employee-employer relationship is heading for extinction. The very definition of “employee” is undergoing reinvention as many business models shift away from the traditional 9-to-5 salaried office worker, to tap into increasingly virtual, global and transient freelance talent pools of skills and expertise. Led by the new thinking of the millennial generation, but also fueled by more experienced freelancers and 2.0 career baby boomers, growing segments of the population now manage portfolio careers. These “eLancers” are motivated less by stability and predictability, and more by flexibility and diversity of work.  It is estimated that in some industries over half of the workforce may be composed of freelance workers by 2025.

These changes were set in motion decades ago, but now speed ahead at an exponential pace; for example, the world’s largest taxi company owns no taxis and the world's largest movie house owns no theaters. Technology is changing jobs in ways that we could never have predicted and therefore, challenges us to be better prepared to avoid the need to catch up.
